In this unit, we trace the invention and development of the Western as a form of American literature in popular culture. Also in this unit, your final project is due, on Monday 11\/16.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">27. Fri 11\/6 Where it Begins: The Dime Novel<\/span><br \/>\nReading: excerpts from the amazing <a href=\"http:\/\/library.stanford.edu\/depts\/dp\/pennies\/home.html\">Stanford University Dime Novel Collection<\/a>. The best way to get a feel for their collection is to <a href=\"http:\/\/suloas.stanford.edu\/swprd_dp\/pnsubs.self\">browse the subjects<\/a> of the thousands of cover art images, and click on a few that look interesting to you. Several <a href=\"http:\/\/library.stanford.edu\/depts\/dp\/pennies\/texts\/dimes_toc.html\">full-text novels are here also<\/a>; you should probably skim a couple of chapters, from any of the Westerns &#8211; e.g. Buffalo Bill, Deadwood Dick, California Joe, or Jesse James.
