Over a period of six weeks, you will work in groups to explore and consider one of his \u00e2\u20ac\u0153thirteen original arguments\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in historical perspective and in intellectual debates going on now.<\/p>\n<p>1. Who is a Person?<br \/>\n2. Who is an American?<br \/>\n3. The Role of Faith<br \/>\n4. What Can we Know and Say?<br \/>\n5. The Limits of Individualism<br \/>\n6. Who Judges the Law?<br \/>\n7. Debt and the Dollar<br \/>\n8. Local v. National Authority<br \/>\n9. Presidential Power<br \/>\n10. The Terms of Trade<br \/>\n11. War and Diplomacy<br \/>\n12. The Environment<br \/>\n13. A Fair, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153More Perfect\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Union<\/p>\n<p>The groups will be organized on Blackboard under \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Thirteen Arguments Groups\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in that space you can discuss, divide up work, track progress, and share materials so that only the members of your group can see them. <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">You have from February 6 to March 13 to complete this project.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Goal:<\/b> Connect these \u00e2\u20ac\u0153enduring debates\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to intellectual currents flowing in American culture, news, law, academia, politics, literature and\/or art today.<\/p>\n<p><b>Process:<\/b> As a group, take your assigned chapter and read it closely. Find multiple opportunities (online, in the caf\u00c3\u00a9, over pizza, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s up to you) to talk about and debate the issues involved, including all group members in the conversations. Familiarize yourselves with any thinkers, texts, or events mentioned in the chapter. Fineman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s book ends around 2009 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c so where has this debate gone since then? Who is talking about this now, and in what contexts? Find some current examples, controversies, or thinkers to extend Fineman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s discussion into 2014 and to make it relevant to our course. <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Do not procrastinate; start on this process immediately.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Products:<\/b> An <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>oral presentation<\/strong><\/span> of 2-3 minutes long (this is almost ridiculously brief, so PRACTICE your presentation carefully for timing and polish; not all group members need present) + one <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">permanent digital artifact<\/span> <\/strong>which can be posted online (such as a Powerpoint, video, Prezi, or podcast).
