I appreciated hearing from each of you and look forward to our first in-person meeting:<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net\/books\/1388871622l\/202680.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net\/books\/1388871622l\/202680.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a>Wednesday Jan 29th, UMass Medical School building, room S2-351 from 5-8 pm<br \/>\n*bringing brown-bag dinner is encouraged, there will be a break in the middle<\/p>\n<p>We will discuss Roy Porter&#8217;s book <em>Blood and Guts: A Short History of Medicine<\/em>, so please bring it to class with you along with notes, questions and ideas for class discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some discussion questions to guide your reading and note-taking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Is the body an assemblage of parts or is it a coherent single entity?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Is disease physiological or ontological (in the parts)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">What displaced humoral medicine theories (and when, and why)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">What were the major scientific innovations in diagnosis and origin of disease?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">What was the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153microbial revolution\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and some of its results?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In what ways were colonialism\/Imperialism and medical development linked?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Why does Porter say that surgery \u00e2\u20ac\u0153for millennia so limited, the craft has become one which knows no frontiers\u00e2\u20ac\u009d?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In what ways do today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hospitals differ from premodern ones? And are today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153huge general hospitals\u00e2\u20ac\u009d now medicine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dinosaurs?
