We will try to define the region (where does the West begin and end?) and map its human, geographic, and mythic landscapes. <\/p>\n<p>To prepare for today, you read Chapter 15 up through page 504 and listened to to the 1-hour episode of the podcast This American Life, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\/479\/little-war-on-the-prairie\">Little War on the Prairie<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (November 23, 2018) about the Dakota War of 1862 and how it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been remembered \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and selectively forgotten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On Monday, Feb 4 <\/strong>we will engage in a Document Workshop about the Chapter 15 documents; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tonahangen.com\/wsc\/us2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DW15-PrepWorksheet-Spr19.doc\">here&#8217;s a worksheet<\/a> to help you prepare ahead of time for the workshop. It was handed out in class but I&#8217;m also providing it as a Word doc you can download if you prefer to type your responses. <\/p>\n<p><em>Speaking of<\/em> mythmaking and memory on the American western prairie, this week I spotted <a href=\"https:\/\/pictorial.jezebel.com\/the-settler-fantasies-woven-into-the-prairie-dresses-1831746430\">an essay<\/a> about the return of the &#8220;prairie dress&#8221; (a popular style in the 1980s) in women&#8217;s boho fashion.
